Alabama Poverty Project Poverty Library

Poverty in America/Alabama Course Syllabus

Includes the following units:

  • Who are the poor and why are they poor?
  • How do we render the lives of the poor? How do middle and upper class people comprehend the lives of the poor?
  • How do informed people of good will help the poor?
  • What do religion and the Bible have to say about poverty?
  • How does poverty look through the eyes of survivors?

A Guide for Teachers and Group Facilitators

This guide was prepared for use by teachers of high-school students, college students and other adults as part of a lesson plan about poverty. Use with children is not recommended, unless exercises are revised for that learning level.

The exercises can be used individually or in groupings that the teacher creates. For this reason, they are provided in sections, allowing the user to use the exercises desired for copying, etc.

All exercises were devised by Dr. Jo M. Dohoney and tested in college classroom settings and in training with adults.
