Female-headed Families
with Children under 18 below Poverty Threshold
The number of female-headed families with related children under 18 that
are considered living below the poverty threshold as defined by the U.S.
Census.
"Related children" includes sons daughters, grandchildren, nieces,
nephews, etc., but not unrelated individuals such as foster children. The
denominator used in computing the percentage is all female-headed families
with children under 18 years of age.

Median Household
Income as a Percent of Alabama Median
The median household income for a given area expressed as a percent of the
state median household income. See Median Household Income for additional
information.
Percent was calculated by the Center for Demographic Research, Auburn University
Montgomery based on data obtained from the 1990 and 2000 Cesnus'.
Number of Physicians
The number of physicians in a given area. Physicians include licensed, active
medical doctors and doctors of osteopathy.
Data supplied by the Alabama Board of Medical Examiners. Data is based on
recorded mailing address of the physician (whether it is the home address
or the address of the practice). Comparable data for 1994 are not available.
Per Capita Income
The mean income computed for all persons within a specified geographic area.
It is derived by dividing the total income of all people 15 years of age
and older within a specified area in 1989 and 1999 by the total population
(all ages) that was reported for that area in the 1990 and 2000 Census'.
Income values have been adjusted for inflation so that 1989 dollars are
comparable with 1999 dollars.

Persons Medicaid
Eligible
All persons enrolled in Medicaid. The terms "enrolled in" and
"eligible for" are used synonymously by the Alabama Medicaid Agency.
Data reported are for the 1992-1993 and 2002-2003 fiscal years. In order
to achieve comparability over these two time periods, data for three Medicare
programs (all providing partial benefits) are excluded: Plan First (family
planning assistance for low income women), Qualified Medicare Beneficiary
(assistance with Medicare premiums, deductibles, and coinsurance), and Specified
Low-Income Medicare Beneficiaries (help with paying monthly Medicare Par
B premiums). The Plan First program was added after 1993 and both the Qualified
Medicare Beneficiary and the Specified Low-Income Medicare Beneficiaries
programs have experienced significant expansion over the 1992-2002 time
frame.

Below 50% of Poverty Threshold
The number of persons whose income was less than one-half of the federally
designated poverty thresholds in 1989 and 1999. For example, the federal
poverty threshold for a family of four (two adults and two children under
18) was $16,895 in 1999, meaning that all persons in this family configuration
with incomes below $16,895 were defined as living in poverty in that year.
Thus, all individuals in families with two adults and two children under
18 who received less than $8,448 in 1999 were below 50% of the poverty threshold.
These figures will vary for other family configurations.

and two children under 18 in 1999) or only marginally above. Hence, all
persons in this family configuration with incomes below $21,119 in 1999
were below 125% of the poverty threshold in that year. These figures will
vary for other family configurations.
