Do you ever dream of what can be?
It’s likely that you wonder about your future and hope for the best. You imagine what it might be like and even have images in your mind of what you would like to happen. And in your dreams, do you imagine making a difference? Maybe you look around and see some things that you would like to see changed. Not everything is right with the world, and somebody needs to do something.
Why not you? The Alabama Poverty Project wants to give you, and other youth like you, an opportunity to explore what can be in our state, and the role you can play in Alabama’s future. It’s called Alabama Possible, a four-day camp in the summer of 2008. At Alabama Possible you will meet other high school students like yourself, people who want to make a difference in the world, starting right here at home. Mostly we will look at poverty in our state – its causes and possible solutions.
But poverty is a complicated, intricate issue and so our sessions together will also explore politics, economic development, health care, education, and other topics. By the end of the week you will be one of the best-informed Alabamians around with regard to how things work in our relationships with one another.
You will hear from some of Alabama’s most outstanding leaders. Very sharp college professors will teach you. And cool college students will be there to help you think about your experience. And, oh yeah, there will be parties too!
Students who have finished their sophomore through senior years will be selected from all over the state and will represent a wide variety of Alabama’s students. At Alabama Possible, you will meet some of the coolest young people around – just like you.
To attend, you will need to fill out an application form and have three adults write letters of recommendation for you. To apply, download the application. All the instructions are included. Cost for Alabama Possible is $150, but scholarships are available!
